I love just about anything made with avocado - but one of my favorite things to make is this Homemade Detox Guacamole. Most people have no idea how powerful avocados really are. A perfect monounsaturated fat (read: heart healthy), avocados are also a good source of Vitamin K, Vitamin C - all of which aid in the detoxification process.

Nutrition-Packed Homemade Guacamole

Rather than buying store-bought guacamole, make your own. This homemade guacamole recipe is full of a handful of incredible spices that have the ability to work wonders in your body. For example:

  • Garlic contains compounds that have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
  • Onion has been shown to improve bone strength.
  • Lime juice is a great source of Vitamin C, which helps to boost the immune system.
  • Cilantro is a stellar source of Vitamin A, which has been shown to decrease the risk of lung cancer.
  • Cumin helps to aid in digestion and could help people dealing with insomnia.
  • The combo of black pepper and turmeric (together) help to enhance the body's natural ability to detoxify.
  • Paprika's beneficial carotenoids have been shown to improve eye health and vision.
  • Cayenne pepper has also been shown to aid in digestion and improve circulation.
  • High quality sea salt contains a myriad trace minerals, which help your body in just about every way possible, including reducing signs of aging.

So there you have it. Always make your own guacamole. Eat it fresh and eat it often. Share this recipe freely! And while tortilla chips are a really tasty side, they don't help your body as much as a BIG plate or bowl of fresh veggies. I can't think of one veggie that doesn't work well with guacamole.

Got leftovers? Use guacamole on wraps or in omelets!

Detox Guacamole

Serves 6

3 avocados, halved and seeded
1 lime, juiced
1 closed of garlic, crushed
1/4 cup cilantro
1/4 cup onion, coarsely chopped
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more if you like heat)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Preparation
1. All all ingredients except for the onion and cilantro to a large bowl.
2. Mash to desired consistency, then add in the onion and cilantro.
3. Chill and served with a rainbow of veggies.

Alternatively, you can also throw all the ingredients into a Vitamix, or high quality blender and pulse. I do this when my kids are eating the guacamole, too. They don't like big chunks of onion. Can't say I was eating big chunks of onion when I was seven either! Still it adds in good flavor and plenty of nutrition. When they don't see it, they still eat it!
