Apple-shaped bodies, this one’s for you! Whether it’s something that’s been plaguing you your whole life, or if it’s a few pounds that have slowly started creeping onto your midsection over the past few years, belly fat is serious. Unique from fat that gets stored throughout other parts of the body, belly fat, also known as visceral fat, is dangerous – and can devastate our health.

Fortunately, belly fat responds very well to the foods we eat. Here are 7 foods you should absolutely eat to shed unhealthy fat. Best of all, you can pick them up from your local grocery store today. Ready to get shopping? Your list is below!

7 Foods For Apple Shape Bodies

Keep in mind, this is just the tip of the iceberg. And as much as these foods are good for you, there are a lot of foods you should avoid, too! Here is my list of the best and worst breakfast foods for belly fat.

No two bodies should necessarily eat the same types of foods. If you gain weight in your belly, but your best friend and co-worker gain weight in their hips and thighs, you need to eat differently.

Why? Hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers that tell our body everything – from sending signals to keep our body at a normal temperature to letting us know when it’s time to go to bed, or even feel happy. Hormones also tell our body where to store fat. Since every body’s hormones sit at varying levels due to age, activity level, gender, lifestyle, etc., we store fat differently.

Apples thrive on a higher protein, higher fat diet in contrast to a lower fat diet. You won’t find low fat yogurts or big bowls of fruit on this list. Rather, Apples do much better with a well-prepared omelet or a delicious yogurt parfait made with plain yogurt and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts.

Foods That Apple Shape Bodies Should Eat

These foods turn an apple-shaped body on, helping to regulate fat storage, control hunger and generally feel healthy. It’s a good starting point. If you want the full program, order The Belly Burn Plan (my book) to get moving in the right direction.

1. Eggs: The whole egg, not just the white. Eggs are a great good for the Apple to eat. There is no need to be afraid of fat as the Apple thrives on healthy fat. The scrutiny of whether or not eggs are good for health seems to never cease, but a 2016 mets-analysis published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that regular moderate consumption of eggs actually lowers stroke risk by 12%. Unadulterated eggs (never eat bagged eggs) are good source of the vitamins, minerals, protein and fat.

2. Salmon: Unique from other fish, salmon contains one of the highest sources of omega-3 fatty acids, a much-needed nutrient our body can’t produce but helps to control inflammation and improve brain health. A fatty fish, salmon is better for an Apple than a less fatty fish. Salmon can be enjoyed grilled as a fillet or smoked over a bed of mixed greens or with capers. It’s also good to know that the omega-3s in this fatty fish have been shown to improve cardiovascular health as well as the way we think!

3. Walnuts: Think of walnuts as the salmon of the tree nut world, just with less protein. Walnuts make a great “accessory” food, making a great complement to this Paleo Banana Bread, or a stand-alone snack. Regardless, walnuts should be a staple over any type of nut for the Apple! Since many Apples struggle to control their hunger, and thus blood sugar levels (sometimes related to type 2 diabetes), it’s helpful to know that regular consumption of walnuts have shown cardiovascular improvement in those living with type 2 diabetes

4: Full Fat Plain Yogurt: If you’re someone who follows a paleo diet, this isn’t for you, but if you’re someone who regularly eats low fat flavored yogurt, it’s time to change things up. Yogurt is popular as it contains beneficial bacterial that can aid in digestion, weight management and overall health. In my opinion, most commercial flavored yogurts have been badly health-washed, or made to wound much healthier than they actually are. First of all, most flavored yogurt is loaded with refined sugar – exactly what the Apple doesn’t need. Second, it’s low in fat (or fat free), another no-no for the Apple. The best bet for the Apple type is an organic plain full fat yogurt. Adding a few ingredients on the back end is always much healthier than the sugar-laden counterpart. Add these ingredients to your yogurt to bring out the flavor and nutrition:

  • Walnuts
  • Cinnamon
  • Berries (fresh or frozen)
  • Chia Seeds (soak 2 tbsp chia seeds in yogurt overnight)

Apple Cider Vinegar for Belly Fat

5: Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): ACV does not make the list for weight loss reasons. Despite some of the research that points in this direction, I’m not completely sold. What ACV does do is help better manage blood sugar level, which almost always helps the Apple. When we can control our blood sugar levels, we inherently better manage insulin and cortisol levels – both of which can be out of control with so many of us especially people who tend to store fat around the midsection.

ACV can be taken as a shot in the morning, or blended into a salad dressing with a little bit of honey, some salt and pepper. Personally, I’m a-ok with ACV, but not everyone can just down a shot of this stuff. If you’re in that camp, start with the dressing, or find a way to include it into your diet. Alternatively, you can substitute with lemon juice, which has an alkalizing effect on the blood, and can give your body a boost of vitamin c. It’s not an apples to apples comparison to ACV, but it will get you on the right path.

My suggestion is to drink an ounce of ACV or lemon juice in lukewarm or warm water every morning before you eat. You can also try my ACV Detox Drink.

6. Cauliflower: Cauliflower makes the list over broccoli or any other cruciferous purely because it’s more versatile. It’s equally as delicious as the others, but if you can eat cauliflower in more foods (see my smoothie recipe below), you’re more likely to eat more of it altogether. Cruciferous vegetables, including cauliflower has the amazing ability to handcuff toxins and drag them out of the body. Think about that. Very few foods can actually do that, and cauliflower can.

Today you can buy cauliflower riced, which makes it very easy to blend into things, like omelets, soups, or even this smoothie, which is my favorite and perfect for Apples:

Traci’s Power Smoothie

  • 1/2 c frozen berries
  • 1/2 c cauliflower rice (or 3/4 c frozen florets)
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 serving protein powder (I like Chocolate Orgain)
  • 1 + c water

Combine all ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth. This smoothie is more of a meal replacement, or even a post-workout meal replacement recovery smoothie.

7. Blueberries: High in fiber, filled with nutrients and good for just about every part of your body from your brain to your gut, blueberries (fresh or frozen) are a great addition to an Apple’s diet in in comparison to any other non-berry fruit. I like blueberries more than other berries purely for their cognitive benefits, but if you can’t find a good bunch of blueberries, you can swap out strawberries, raspberries or blackberries just the same. All berries contain plenty of fiber, they’re lower in sugar and have the ability to fill us out more than fill us out.
